The Elite Hall Clocks - Bawo & Dotter book was published in 1997 by the Greater St. Louis Inc., St. Louis Chapter #14 host and co-host Chapter #168 the National 400-Day Clock Collector Chapter. The material was compiled, edited, and published by Dr. Bryan Rogers F.N.A.W.C.C. and Mr. David Warner F.N.A.W.C.C. Mr. Thomas Spittler F.N.A.W.C.C. provided the historical text and editorial efforts.
This soft bound 212 page book is an excellent field guide providing historical reviews and extensive pictorial movement and clock case assessments. Book size is 10 3/4"H x 8 1/2"W x 1/2"D.
The factual account should sharpen the desire to know more of these legacies and heighten the search to collect and conserve what so many already refer to as the oldest family member.
The story begins in 1886 with Charles Adolophe Jacques of New York and how he began to capitalize on the popularity of the hall clock. By 1895, Charles Jacques joined Bawo & Dotter to establish their new clock department. Charles Jacque was awarded many horological patents.
The first 1904 "Elite" tubular chiming hall clocks catalog was published and is similar in style to other catalogs of that era such as the Frank Herschede Co. and Harris and Harrington. The 1904 catalog documents how to mount the movement to the case and provides pictures of the clock models with the case number, clock size, and case wood. Also provided is the 1905-06 Hall and Mantel Clocks Price List which gives insights to the many different movement and case options. By 1907 another hall clock catalog was published which detailed many aspects of the movement, dials, mercury pendulum, and tubular bells. In 1908, the catalogs continued to grow in product offerings such as more mantel clocks, cuckoo clocks, and regulators. The last two reproduced catalogs of 1910 and 1914 provides additional clock designs and pricing updates.
On a side note, there are many Bawo & Dotter advertisements in the Herschede - American Crown of Hall Clocks book by author Christine Griffen. In each of the business years the Herschede competition such as Bawo & Dotter is documented and gives the reader insights to the positioning of their clocks to the industry. David Warner, one of the co-authors of the Bawo & Dotter book, and Christine Griffen had numerous discussions on the similarities and differences with the Herschede/Bawo & Dotter clocks.
